Cabral wins the World Cup's best goal award

Cape Verde defender Sidnei Lopes Cabral has won the award for the best goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Cabral, who plays for Benfica in Portugal, scored a stunning goal from the left corner of the net past Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in his country's Round of 32 match against Argentina. FIFA's official website stated that Cabral's goal received the most votes in the online poll. Sidnei Lopes Cabral said of his achievement: "I hope to have many pictures with Messi." He added: "When I dribbled past the opponent and saw the angle was open, I said to myself, 'Let's go for it. I can shoot well with both feet,' and I saw an open space. I prepared myself for it and struck the ball well." Cape Verde qualified for the Round of 32 for the first time in their history in their debut World Cup appearance. They drew all three of their group stage matches against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia before narrowly losing 2-3 to Argentina in the Round of 32.
