Mbappe breaks two historic records in one match

French star Kylian Mbappé continued to make history with his national team, leading "Les Bleus" to victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16 of the 2016 World Cup and achieving two historic milestones in a single match. Mbappé scored the game's only goal from a penalty kick, becoming the first player in French national team history to reach 100 direct goal contributions for the national team, bringing his tally to 63 goals and 37 assists in 104 international appearances. The French captain further cemented his status as the all-time top scorer for "Les Bleus," having previously surpassed Olivier Giroud's record of 57 goals and widening the gap with the legendary Thierry Henry, who scored 51. Mbappé's achievements didn't stop there, as he also set a new record for the most goals scored by a French player in a single season for both club and country. The Real Madrid star increased his tally to 55 goals in the 2025-2026 season, surpassing his previous best of 54 goals in the 2022-2023 season. With this achievement, Mbappé now boasts three of the top five goalscoring records in the history of French players in a single season, continuing his record-breaking spree at the age of 27. Match after match, Mbappé confirms his status as one of the brightest stars of his generation, having combined brilliance with his club and national team, leading France to the World Cup quarterfinals and continuing their quest for another world title.
