Mahrez breaks records at the World Cup

Algerian star Riyad Mahrez continued to make history at the 2026 World Cup, after delivering an exceptional performance and scoring two goals in his country's match, achieving a series of unprecedented records. Mahrez, aged 35 years and 4 months, became the second oldest African player to score a brace in a single World Cup match, behind Cameroonian legend Roger Milla, who achieved this feat twice during the 1990 World Cup at the age of 38. Mahrez also became the second player in the history of the Algerian national team to score a brace in the World Cup, after Salah Assad, who scored two goals against Chile on June 24, 1982. The achievements of the "Desert Warriors" captain did not stop there, as he became the first player in the history of the Algerian national team to reach 11 goals in major tournaments, with 9 goals in the African Cup of Nations and 2 goals in the World Cup, thus strengthening his position as one of the greatest Algerian football players in history. Mahrez also entered the history books as the oldest player to score a goal for the Algerian national team in the World Cup finals, surpassing the previous record held by Djamel Zidane, who scored in the 1986 World Cup at the age of 31 years and one month, confirming that the Algerian captain's age did not prevent him from continuing to shine and achieve success on the biggest football stage in the world.
