FIFA launches innovative services for the blind at the World Cup
FIFA has announced a package of services for blind and visually impaired fans during the 2026 World Cup, as part of its commitment to promoting inclusivity and expanding access to the match experience. These services include audio description, which provides a detailed and live description of the game, and touch-sensitive panels that convey real-time match details through audio and tactile effects, giving fans a more interactive and immersive experience. FIFA stated that the audio description service will be available in English and French for matches played in Canada, and in English and Spanish for matches in the United States and Mexico. It can be accessed via the FIFA Audio Description app, available on the Google Play and Apple App Stores. FIFA has also installed touch-sensitive panels at several stadiums, including Dallas, Texas; New York, New Jersey; Seattle, Washington; and Vancouver, British Columbia, for select matches, enabling fans to follow the action in real time. FIFA confirmed that combining descriptive commentary and tactile boards, along with the immersive atmosphere inside the stadiums, provides a comprehensive experience for blind and visually impaired fans, making every goal and crucial moment more realistic. The organization noted that this initiative is part of its commitment to social responsibility and enhancing accessibility for all fans. It explained that the tournament will also feature additional services, including training for stadium staff to support people with sensory disabilities, providing sign language interpretation at all matches, and offering mobility assistance, access cards, and other facilities.
