Cape Verde continues to surprise at the World Cup

Cape Verde continued to make history in their debut World Cup appearance, securing a valuable 2-2 draw against Uruguay in their Group H match on Monday morning at Miami Stadium. The African nation established themselves as one of the tournament's biggest surprises, moving to two points and sharing second place with Uruguay, though Uruguay holds the advantage on goal difference. Spain leads the group with four points after their resounding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, while Saudi Arabia sits at the bottom with one point. The match was thrilling from the outset, with Kevin Peña opening the scoring for Cape Verde in the 21st minute, netting his country's first-ever World Cup goal. Ronald Araujo equalized for Uruguay two minutes before halftime, and Agustín Canobbio added a second goal in first-half stoppage time, giving Uruguay a 2-1 lead at the break. In the second half, Cape Verde continued their strong performance and managed to come back into the game, after Varela scored the equalizer in the 61st minute, giving his country a well-deserved point that kept their hopes alive for qualifying for the next round, confirming their ability to compete with the major teams in the World Championship.
