Storms and heavy rain threaten the opening of the World Cup

Mexican authorities have warned that the opening match of the World Cup in Mexico City next Thursday could be affected by heavy rain and thunderstorms, with the potential for strikes and protests also looming. The Secretariat for Integrated Risk Management and Civil Protection in Mexico City has repeatedly declared an orange alert due to the weather conditions in parts of the capital. The opening match between Mexico and South Africa is one of 104 matches in the expanded World Cup, and the weather is expected to significantly impact the entire tournament. A tropical storm forming off Mexico's Pacific coast is also threatening the country. The opening match will be preceded by an hour-long opening ceremony featuring pop star Shakira performing the World Cup anthem. Heavy rains in Mexico City over the past few days have repeatedly flooded streets and disrupted public transportation, with some metro lines suspended and authorities forced to close entrances to several stations.
