Limited interest in the 2026 World Cup within America

A recent survey revealed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has yet to garner widespread interest among the population, despite the imminent start of the world's biggest football event. The survey results showed that the majority of respondents do not plan to follow the tournament regularly, while less than a third expressed interest in watching the matches, and only a small fraction voiced significant excitement for the upcoming event. These figures reflect the ongoing challenges football faces in attracting a broad audience in the United States, despite the game's remarkable growth in recent decades, both in terms of player numbers and match attendance. Domestic league competitions have seen significant development in recent years, bolstered by the attraction of several international football stars who have contributed to increasing the game's popularity and enhancing its media and fan presence. Nevertheless, major European leagues and international clubs still command the attention of a large percentage of US football fans, while traditional local sports maintain their prominent position in the sporting landscape. The survey highlighted a clear difference in interest levels between immigrants and those born in the United States, with immigrants expressing greater enthusiasm for the tournament. This reflects the historical connection between football and the diverse cultures and communities residing in the country. Asian and Latino communities also recorded the highest levels of interest in the World Cup, underscoring the growing role these groups play in promoting and enhancing the popularity of football within American society. These results come just days before the start of the tournament, which will be held for the first time with 48 participating teams. Expectations are that the atmosphere of global competition will contribute to increased viewership figures in the United States in the coming weeks.
