Trump threatens to move 2026 World Cup matches

US President Donald Trump said that FIFA President Gianni Infantino is willing to support moving the 2026 World Cup matches from one US host city to another if necessary for security reasons. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump added that if he felt there were threats or unsafe conditions in any city, he would ask Infantino to move the matches to another location, stressing that the FIFA president would readily comply with this request. Trump's comments came after his meeting with Infantino in Egypt on the sidelines of an international summit to support a ceasefire in Gaza, attended by more than 20 world leaders. The US president indicated that the issue could also include some of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, saying that if he deemed them inappropriate, they could be moved to another location. It is worth noting that Boston will host seven matches of the 2026 World Cup, while San Francisco and Seattle will host six matches each, and Los Angeles will host eight matches. The United States is co-hosting the tournament in cooperation with Mexico and Canada, with the majority of matches being held in the United States after the number of participating teams was increased to 48. This year, Trump formed a special White House task force to oversee World Cup affairs under his leadership, despite the deployment of National Guard troops in some US cities for security reasons, amid criticism from local authorities and state governors.
