Portugal seeks revenge on Germany after 25 years

Football fans around the world will be in for a heavyweight clash between Germany and Portugal on Wednesday evening at the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals. Portugal enters their anticipated match against Germany with the ambition of breaking a historic jinx that has spanned more than a quarter of a century. The "Brazil of Europe" have not achieved a single victory over "Die Mannschaft" since the two teams met on June 20, 2000, in the group stage of Euro 2000, which Portugal won 3-0. Coach Julian Nagelsmann aspires to translate the German national team's recent development into a continental achievement that will restore their prestige, while Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates are seeking to win the title for the second time, in what could be the Portuguese star's last chance to add another trophy to his international record. The two teams have met 19 times, with Germany leading the head-to-head record with 11 wins, compared to only four for Portugal, with five draws. The winner of the Germany-Portugal match will face the winner of the other match, between France and Spain, in the final scheduled for next Sunday evening.
