Mbappe is closing in on Benzema's historic European record

Real Madrid's French star Kylian Mbappé is now just 25 goals away from equaling his compatriot Karim Benzema's record as the top French scorer in the history of Europe's top five leagues. Mbappé's brace against Sevilla brought his tally to 256 goals, securing him second place and surpassing Bernard Lacombe . The Real Madrid striker's two goals against Sevilla raised his La Liga goal count to eight this season and brought his career totals in Europe's elite leagues to 255 and 256, surpassing Lacombe's 255 goals in Ligue 1. Only Benzema, with 281 goals in Europe's top five leagues (238 in La Liga and 43 in Ligue 1), has scored more goals in this list . With the French star approaching his 28th birthday this December, he is only 25 goals away from equaling Benzema's record, opening the door for him to close in on or even surpass the top spot before the end of the season . Thierry Henry comes next on the list of top French goalscorers, having scored 233 goals in Europe's top five leagues, including 175 in the English Premier League with Arsenal . Alexandre Lacazette scored 54 Premier League goals, while his total across Europe's major leagues reached 215. Ahead of him is Hervé Revelli, who netted 216 goals and twice won the French league's top scorer award during the 1960s with Saint-Étienne . Mbappé's stature isn't limited to the number of goals; his goals-per-game ratio is also impressive. When ranking the top 20 French goalscorers based on average goals per game, the Real Madrid star comes in second with 0.8 goals per game, behind only Just Fontaine, who tops the list with 0.82 . Also featured on the list is Michel Platini, who scored an average of 0.51 goals per game, behind strikers David Trezeguet, who averaged 0.55, and Jean-Pierre Papin, who averaged 0.52 goals per game.
