A historic run brings Messi closer to a new record

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi continues his dazzling form with Inter Miami, extending his streak of consecutive matches in which he has either scored or assisted to 14 games after a victory over Atlanta United. This achievement marks the second-longest goal contribution streak of his career, a streak that has now lasted for over two months . The streak began on August 15, 2026, with an assist against Nashville, and since then, the Argentine maestro has not left a single match without contributing to a goal for either his club or country. After setting up his first goal, he found the net against Philadelphia Union, then repeated the feat against Toronto FC, before reaching the pinnacle of his form with four goals and an assist against Montreal Wanderers in a single night . Following this remarkable performance, the Ballon d'Or winner continued to add to his tally, providing assists against Atlanta United and Chicago Fire, before scoring again against Nashville. Against Cruz Azul, he combined scoring and assisting, before finding the net against San Diego FC and Columbus Crew . Internationally, the Argentine star scored one goal and provided two assists in his farewell match for Argentina against Benin. He then netted a brace against D.C. United and provided an assist against New York City FC, before returning to score another brace against Atlanta United, reaching his 14th consecutive match with a goal contribution . During this run, the Inter Miami star scored 16 goals and provided eight assists, totaling 24 goal contributions, averaging 1.71 contributions per game. He also scored in nine of the first 13 matches of the streak and managed to both score and assist in three of them. The match against Montreal was the highlight of this period, as it alone saw the Argentine star contribute five goals . With this achievement, the Albiceleste captain surpassed his previous streak of 13 consecutive goals, which he also achieved during 2016, between May and July. That period yielded 25 goal contributions, comprising 14 goals and 11 assists, and continued even during his participation in the World Cup, before culminating in two assists in the final minutes against England in the semi-final . Although the current streak has extended by one match, the previous one was more productive in terms of average, with the Argentine star averaging 1.92 goal contributions per game, compared to 1.71 in his current streak . The record holder now needs to contribute to goals in four more consecutive matches, either by scoring or assisting, to surpass his longest streak, which he achieved with Barcelona between January and March 2011, when he contributed to goals in 17 consecutive matches . During that streak, Messi scored 20 goals and provided nine assists, totaling 29 goal contributions, at an average of 1.71 contributions per game – the same average he is currently achieving with Inter Miami .
