Klopp on the verge of a historic negative record with Germany

German coach Jürgen Klopp is seeking his first victory with the national team when they face Serbia on Thursday in Munich, in the current edition of the UEFA Nations League. This will be Klopp's third match in charge of the Mannschaft, and it carries particular significance as he faces the prospect of setting a new record for a national team coach . Klopp has failed to win either of his first two matches with Germany, starting with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, followed by a 1-0 defeat to Greece in his first home game . The importance of the Serbia match lies in the fact that anything less than a win will make Klopp the first coach in German national team history to fail to secure a victory in his first three matches . Despite this shaky start, Klopp is not an exception in the history of the German national team. Coaches of the caliber of Sepp Herberger and Helmut Schön also failed to win their first two matches with the Mannschaft, but both managed draws at the beginning of their tenures . Herberger and Schön both boast impressive records with the German national team. Herberger led Germany to the 1954 World Cup title in the tournament known as the "Miracle of Bern," while Schön achieved a unique feat, becoming the only coach to have led Germany to both the World Cup and the European Championship . Schön guided Germany to victory in the 1972 European Championship before leading them to the 1974 World Cup title, cementing his place among the most prominent coaches in German football history . In contrast, only three of the last twelve coaches to manage Germany managed to win their first three matches: Rudi Völler, Joachim Löw, and Hansi Flick . Klopp downplayed the significance of his initial results with the national team after the loss to Greece, emphasizing that he doesn't dwell on statistics from the first matches. He stated, "I prefer a bad start to a bad finish," clearly indicating that his assessment of his experience with Germany will not be solely based on the initial results.
