Martinez will guard Chelsea's goal until 2029

English club Chelsea have announced the signing of Argentine international goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa during the current summer transfer window. Martinez, 33, signed a three-year contract with the Blues, keeping him with the team until June 30, 2029. The Argentine goalkeeper began his football career at the Independiente academy, before moving to Arsenal in August 2010, when he was 17 years old. Martinez had several loan spells to gain experience with the first team, before getting the chance to play regularly for Arsenal during the 2019-2020 season, where he started the last 11 games for the team and contributed to winning the FA Cup. At the start of the following season, Martinez won the FA Community Shield with Arsenal, before leaving the club and joining Aston Villa in September 2020. During his six seasons with Aston Villa, Martinez established himself as one of the world's top goalkeepers, making 256 appearances for the team and winning the Europa League title with them last May. On the international level, Martinez made his debut for the Argentine national team in June 2021, and since then he has become the starting goalkeeper for the "Tango Dancers", and has played 67 international matches. Martinez achieved many major accomplishments with the Argentine national team, most notably winning the Copa America title twice in 2021 and 2024, in addition to winning the 2022 World Cup.
