Malka Wrexham declare their challenge: The Premier League is our next target

American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, owners of Welsh club Wrexham, have reaffirmed their commitment to leading the team to the English Premier League after an extraordinary journey that saw them rise from the lower divisions to the Championship in a short period. Wrexham are preparing for the 2026-2027 Championship season with high hopes, starting with a tough away match against their Welsh rivals Cardiff City in a derby that carries special significance at the beginning of the new season. Wrexham came agonizingly close to reaching the playoffs for promotion to the Premier League last season, finishing seventh in the regular season, just shy of the promotion places. They entered the final matchday in sixth place but squandered a golden opportunity after a 2-2 draw at home against Middlesbrough, allowing Hull City to move into the playoff spot, before Hull ultimately secured promotion to the Premier League. Despite missing out on promotion, Reynolds believes the team's achievements are a source of immense pride, emphasizing his admiration for Wrexham's performance last season. Meanwhile, McIlhenney has raised expectations for the new season. McIlhenney stressed that the goal is no longer simply to secure a place in the Championship, but to compete at the top and strive for promotion to the Premier League. He emphasized that the team's mentality must be based on a constant desire to win and improve. He added that ambition doesn't mean seeking victory at any cost, but rather working to reach the highest possible level, both as a team and as individual players, with a focus on continuous improvement from match to match and season to season. Wrexham fans are experiencing one of the most exciting periods in the club's history, as the team has transformed in just a few years from playing in the National League, the fifth tier of English football, to the Championship. Promotion to the Premier League is now the anticipated final chapter in the club's remarkable rise. This coincided with Reynolds and McElhenney celebrating five years since their acquisition of the club, a period during which their footballing experience has become a global phenomenon, especially with the huge success of the documentary series “Welcome to Wrexham”, which conveyed the details of the team’s journey and the ambitions of its owners to a wide audience around the world.
