UK press reports blew up a heavy-caliber surprise about the Portuguese star and Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo , who missed Sunday's Manchester derby against Manchester City, which was held on Sunday, at the top of the 28th round of the Premier League.
Manchester United had announced prior the derby the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, as some reports had mentioned a state of tension in the relationship between him and his German coach, Ralf Rangnick.
But the German coach denied the news in statements he made to the British "Sky Sports" network, as he confirmed that the Portuguese star's absence was only due to injury.
According to the Athletic, UK subscription-based sports website indicated that Ronaldo left Manchester before the match, heading to his native Portugal with his private plane, after he learned that he had been excluded from the derby squad against Man City.
The website explained that the trip caused a surprise inside the United dressing room, after the players were surprised that Ronaldo did not attend to support them in the derby, so the mystery increased about the date of the player's return to the team again.
Manchester City strengthened its lead in Premier League standings, after its wide victory over its neighbor Manchester United 4-1, in the derby meeting that brought them together on Sunday evening, at the “Etihad” stadium, in the twenty-eighth round of the Premier League for the current season 2021-2022.
Ronaldo is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2024 but, he may wish to quit this summer if United finish outside of the Premier League's top four.
Manchester City leads in the English Premier League with 69 points, 6 points behind runner-up Liverpool, while Manchester United came fifth after its score was frozen at 47 points.
