Amid Russia-Ukraine Crisis: UEFA declares status on making U-turn on Russia Champions League final
The European Football Association (UEFA) has denied the rumors circulating during the past hours that UEFA is almost certain to switch this season's Champions League final away from St Petersburg amid the Ukraine-Russia crisis.
The 2021-22 Champions League final is due to be staged at the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg, which is the home ground of Russian giants Zenit on May 28, as it is decided in advance before the start of the tournament.
UEFA said in an official statement on Tuesday: "There are no plans to change the stadium for the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final, we are constantly monitoring the situation, and insist that no decision has been taken yet."
The Daily Star, the daily tabloid newspaper published from Monday to Saturday in the United Kingdom reported that the European Union leaders are considering moving the match to Wembley Stadium in the English capital, London.
UEFA is closely monitoring the Russian-Ukrainian crisis with the aim of developing a contingency plan if necessary. And last season's final was moved from Istanbul to Porto just three weeks before the start of the match, after the Turkish city was placed on the red list for the Corona virus.
