A historic achievement awaits Queiroz at the World Cup
Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz is on the verge of making history after the Ghana Football Association announced his appointment as head coach of the national team in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. This will make him the second most-capped coach in World Cup history, equaling the record held by Serbian Bora Milutinovic. Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira still tops the list as the most-capped coach in the tournament's history, having led different national teams in six editions, most notably winning the 1994 title with Brazil. Queiroz's appointment comes shortly after his departure from coaching the Omani national team, following their failure to qualify for the World Cup finals, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association decided to dismiss coach Otto Addo, despite him leading the team to qualification, after disappointing friendly results last March. If Queiroz participates in the 2026 World Cup, it will be his fifth consecutive appearance at the tournament, having previously led Portugal and Iran in the 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions. This would equal the record set by Milutinovic, who managed several national teams between 1986 and 2002. Queiroz, who was born in Mozambique, boasts an impressive coaching career, having managed Egypt, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa, in addition to his time with Real Madrid. Ghana is expected to face a tough challenge in the group stage, having been drawn alongside Croatia, England, and Panama in the tournament, which kicks off on June 11.
