A large fine imposed on Neymar has been cancelled

A court in Rio de Janeiro state overturned a hefty fine of over three million dollars imposed on Brazilian football star Neymar for alleged environmental violations related to the construction of an artificial lake on his property. The case stemmed from a 2023 ruling by the municipal authorities of Mangaratiba, a coastal city about 130 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro where the player owns a luxury villa. He was accused of polluting the area's waters through construction work that allegedly involved dumping waste into the sea, as well as carrying out urban alterations without the necessary environmental permits. The violations identified by the authorities at the time included actions deemed environmentally unauthorized, such as altering the course of a nearby river and removing protected soil and vegetation without official permission. This led local authorities to impose a hefty fine in July 2023. However, the court later overturned the penalty, deeming the investigation upon which the charges were based legally insufficient, particularly as it relied primarily on photos and videos submitted through an anonymous complaint in 2019. The judge considered this a weakness that undermined the strength of the evidence, thus ending the temporary suspension of the previously imposed fine. Neymar's defense team, on the other hand, presented technical reports confirming that water quality in the area during the period in question had not deteriorated beyond permissible limits, denying the existence of scientific evidence proving actual environmental pollution linked to the work carried out. The defense also pointed out that the case gained significant media attention due to the player's global fame, which contributed to amplifying the accusations from the outset, despite the lack of conclusive proof of wrongdoing. On the sporting front, Neymar is experiencing a turbulent period in his career. After returning to his former club Santos last season, recurring injuries have limited his appearances and affected his physical and technical readiness. Furthermore, he has not been included in the plans of Brazil's national team coach, Carlo Ancelotti, since October 2023, due to his extended absence from international competitions, despite his continued ambition to return and participate in the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
