UEFA punishes Benfica for racism
UEFA has fined Benfica €40,000 following racist incidents during their Champions League playoff match against Real Madrid. The penalty stems from offensive chants and gestures made by some Benfica fans during the game in Lisbon on February 17, which Real Madrid won 1-0. The incident caused a 10-minute stoppage after Brazilian star Vinicius Junior complained of racist abuse. Television footage showed some fans making offensive gestures as he celebrated his goal. The accused fan denied any involvement, and UEFA is continuing its investigation. The governing body has also placed Benfica on probation for a year, warning that parts of the Estádio da Luz could be closed for future European matches if similar incidents occur. The Portuguese club had previously taken action by suspending five fans in connection with the incident, stressing its complete rejection of any racist practices, while UEFA emphasized its commitment to combating racism and providing a safe environment inside stadiums.
