A sudden injury threatens Neymar's return to the National Team
Brazilian star Neymar has suffered another blow in his bid to regain his place in the national team, after it was confirmed he will miss his club Santos' match against Mirassol in the Brazilian football league on Tuesday due to persistent muscle fatigue. Santos explained that the player's absence is a precautionary measure to prevent the injury from worsening. However, the timing of his absence has sparked considerable controversy, especially as it coincided with Brazilian national team coach Carlo Ancelotti's visit to São Paulo to closely observe the player and assess his technical and physical condition. According to media reports, Ancelotti traveled from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo specifically to watch Neymar during the match, as part of the coaching staff's monitoring of national team players before announcing the upcoming squad. The player's absence from the match has caused surprise and frustration within the Brazilian Football Confederation, as the Italian coach had hoped to evaluate the number 10's performance on the field. Ancelotti had previously emphasized that he would only include players physically fit and capable of meeting the demands of international play in the national team, which could cast doubt on Neymar's future with the national team, especially with the squad announcement approaching on March 16th in preparation for two friendly matches against France and Croatia on March 26th and 31st, respectively. Neymar has not appeared in a Brazilian national team jersey since October 2023, when he suffered serious knee ligament injuries that sidelined him for an extended period, despite remaining the national team's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 128 international appearances. Since returning to Santos in January 2025 from Al-Hilal, Neymar has shown glimpses of his renowned form, but has struggled to maintain consistency due to recurring injuries and a lack of full fitness. In contrast, the Brazilian national team boasts a wealth of attacking options, including Vinicius Junior, Rafinha, Gabriel Martinelli, Andrique, and Matheus Cunha, making it even more difficult for Neymar to regain his starting position. Ancelotti is expected to continue his tour of Brazilian stadiums, attending the Botafogo vs. Flamengo match in Rio de Janeiro, while his assistants will be watching Santos' upcoming game against Corinthians at the Vila Belmiro stadium. Time seems to be running out for Neymar to reclaim his place in the national team, as the announcement of the final squad for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in Canada, the United States, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, draws near.
