Napoli commemorates the fifth anniversary of Maradona's death
Italian club Napoli and its fans commemorated the fifth anniversary of the death of Argentine legend Diego Maradona on the sidelines of their Champions League match against Azerbaijani side Qarabag on Tuesday. Special footage of Maradona was shown on the stadium's giant screens, with the stadium announcer saying, "Napoli wants to remember you with a special video. Five years ago, the greatest in history left us." This prompted a unified chant of "Diego! Diego!" from the fans in the stands. In the tenth minute (the number Maradona wore throughout his career), the fans responded with a chant of "There is only one Maradona!" and sang songs while waving flags, shirts, and scarves to honor the memory of the Argentine icon. Maradona died of a heart attack at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020, just two weeks after being discharged from a Buenos Aires hospital following surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain. Maradona led Napoli to their first two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990, and after his death, Napoli renamed their stadium after the Argentine legend in his honor. Maradona is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time and captained Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup.
