Real Madrid player suffers stroke

Former Real Madrid and Feyenoord winger Royston Drenthe has been taken to hospital after suffering a stroke, a group of former Dutch and Belgian footballers confirmed. In an official statement, the group said Drenthe, 38, is receiving good medical care and is in "good hands," noting that his condition is stable. The statement added: "The team and everyone involved wish Royston a speedy recovery. His family requests peace and privacy during this time so that they can support him and provide him with the space he needs for his recovery." Drenthe announced his retirement from football in 2023, after a professional career that included stints at several clubs, most notably Real Madrid, Feyenoord, Everton, Reading, and Sheffield Wednesday.
