Heidenheim fan taken to hospital by helicopter

A fan suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by helicopter following an accident during Heidenheim's 2-1 Bundesliga win over Augsburg. "Shortly before the end of the match, a fan fell from the fence of the east stand onto the pitch," Heidenheim said on their website. "He was stabilized at the Voith Arena and then taken to hospital. We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone who helped him," the statement added. "Heidenheim and FC Augsburg express their deepest sympathy to you, your family and all your friends. We send you our support and encouragement so that you can recover as soon as possible." Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt said after his team's first win of the season that the fan was "fighting for his life" after being airlifted to hospital by helicopter, which landed on the pitch. Fans stopped cheering after the incident, covering the man and the paramedics treating him with flags and banners, before the coaches' post-match press conferences were canceled after brief statements in support of the injured fan.
