Egypt seeks to avoid the Algerian scenario in front of the elephants of Côte d'Ivoire
Giants Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt lock horns on Wednesday as the Round of 16 of the ongoing Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021 gains full momentum. The Egyptian team succeeded in qualifying for the round of 16 in the African Cup of Nations, after it ranked fourth in Group D with 6 points (from two wins over Guinea Bissau and Sudan).
After losing 0-1 against Nigeria for their start, Egypt won narrowly 1-0 against Guinea Bissau and Sudan to reach the Round of 16. But it’s a totally different story now. Egypt remains a formidable opponent and the Ivorians know that the Pharaohs have often blocked their way in the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
At the Japoma stadium and after beating Algeria, the Elephants will face a Egypt that did not impress a lot in the group stage. Ivory Coast, nicknamed the Elephants, has scored 7 points with two wins over Algeria and Equatorial Guinea and a draw with Sierra Leone, while Egypt collected 6 points with wins over Guinea Bissau and Sudan and a loss against Nigeria.
This upcoming encounter between Egypt and Côte d'Ivoire holds the number 11, as the two teams have previously met in 10 matches in the African Nations, including four confrontations on the way to crown the Pharaohs in the African Championships in the 86, 98, 2006 and 2008 editions.
