Fluminense goalkeeper makes football history

Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio, who plays for Fluminense, has made history by becoming the record holder for the most official matches played in men's football, playing his 1,391st professional match. The historic achievement came on Tuesday evening during his team's match against Colombia's America de Cali in the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, which Fluminense won 2-0 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Fabio, 44, had equaled the record previously held by legendary English goalkeeper Peter Shilton on Saturday, before taking it alone four days later. Although there has been no official announcement yet from FIFA or the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) regarding the recognition of the record as an official one, Brazilian media and Fluminense have confirmed that Fabio has become the player with the most official appearances in men's football history. Following the match, Fabio expressed his pride in reaching this milestone, saying, "Sometimes we don't realize the value of what we achieve at the moment. This is a record that has stood for many years, and I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout this long journey." The veteran goalkeeper received a special tribute from the Fluminense fans, who chanted his name and elevated him to the ranks of legends. He also received a commemorative plaque commemorating his achievement.
