De Gea knocks on Manchester United's doors

Manchester United appear to have opened an old door once again, after the club began secret moves to explore the possibility of bringing back their former goalkeeper David de Gea, who currently plays for Italian club Fiorentina. The 34-year-old Spanish veteran left Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 after his contract expired and remained without a club for a full season before signing with Fiorentina in the summer of 2024. According to the British newspaper, The Sun, Manchester United are interested in bringing De Gea back, especially after it became clear that his contract with Fiorentina includes a low release clause that allows him to easily leave if he so desires. De Gea's recent return to Old Trafford for a friendly match between United and Fiorentina (which ended 1-1) has increased speculation about a possible return. The Spanish goalkeeper made 545 appearances for the Red Devils between 2011 and 2023 and is one of the club's most capped players. During the visit, De Gea expressed his feelings in a touching message to the fans, saying: "From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all the love... May our paths cross again." He also received a souvenir from his former teammate Bruno Fernandes, a moment that was applauded by the fans. Although new coach Ruben Amorim is relying on Cameroonian Andre Onana as his first choice, uncertainty still surrounds his future, especially after he missed most of the preseason due to injury. In a statement, Amorim said: "Like the rest of the players, everyone has to prove themselves. I haven't decided yet who will be the first-choice goalkeeper."
