Chelsea donates Club World Cup bonuses to Jota's family

English club Chelsea has decided to honor the memory of the late Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva by donating a portion of their players' bonuses after the team won the expanded 2025 Club World Cup in the United States, following a resounding 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final. The Blues received $114.6 million in prize money from the tournament, with the club setting aside $15.5 million (approximately £11.4 million) to be distributed among the players who participated in the tournament. A joint decision by the club and players to allocate up to $500,000 to be paid equally to the families of Jota and Silva was made by the club. Diogo Jota, the Liverpool striker, and his brother André Silva, who played for Portuguese club Penafiel, died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, on July 3, just ten days before Chelsea won the Club World Cup final. In a touching tribute to Jota, Liverpool have unveiled plans to erect a memorial statue at Anfield to honor him after he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club. Players will wear the "Forever 20" logo on their shirts and jackets throughout the 2025-26 season, and the club's official charity, the LFC Foundation, will launch a grassroots football program in the Portuguese international's name. A special fan mosaic and minute's silence will be held during Liverpool's first Premier League match against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday. The club also announced last month that it would retire the number 20 shirt across the squad in honor of Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
