Barcelona chasing a scoring achievement in La Liga

Barcelona is preparing to officially crown its 28th La Liga title when it hosts Villarreal on Sunday evening at Montjuïc Stadium, in the 37th and penultimate round of the 2024-25 season. The Catalan club officially clinched the La Liga title after defeating Espanyol 2-0 in the Catalan derby last Thursday evening, in the 36th round of the season, securing top spot in the standings with two rounds remaining. According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has set a special challenge in its final two rounds against Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao: reaching the 100-goal mark in the league this season. The team currently has 97 goals scored after 36 matches under coach Hansi Flick. Barcelona is seeking to reach the "hundred-goal mark" for the ninth time in its history in the league, having scored 100 goals or more in eight previous seasons, as follows:
2016-2017 (116), 2012-2013 (115), 2011-2012 (114), 2015-2016 (112), 2014-2015 (110), 2008-2009 (105), 1996-1997 (102), 2013-2014 (100).
Robert Lewandowski leads Barcelona's La Liga scoring charts with 25 goals, three behind Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé, the competition's top scorer with 28 goals. Mbappé made the most of the Pole's injury and overcame him. The Frenchman will play at Seville on Sunday, then face Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabéu in the final round.
