Gyokeres ignites the Golden Boot race

Swedish star Victor Gyokeres , the Sporting Lisbon striker, sparked the competition for the European Golden Shoe award for the 2024-25 season after scoring in the final round of the Portuguese league, leading his team to victory over Vitória Guimarães and the league title for the second consecutive season. Gyokeres' tally of 39 league goals puts him at the top of the Golden Boot list with 58.5 points, benefiting from the fact that goals in the Portuguese league are calculated at 1.5 points, as it is outside the top five European leagues. Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah are both tied for second place with 56 points each, having scored 28 goals in their respective leagues, with each player having two games remaining. Meanwhile, English striker Harry Kane, Bayern Munich's striker, was eliminated from the Golden Boot race after finishing his Bundesliga season with 26 goals, effectively eliminating him from consideration for the award. Barcelona's Polish star, Robert Lewandowski, still has a slim chance of winning the title, having scored 25 goals this season. With two matches remaining against Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao, he may need to score a significant number of goals, given his rivals' slump, to return to the competition.
