Laporta Explains Why Hansi Flick's Contract Renewal Was Delayed

Joan Laporta Explains Delay in Extending Hansi Flick’s Contract

Joan Laporta, the president of FC Barcelona, has shed light on the reasons behind the delay in renewing Hansi Flick’s contract, despite the team’s recent achievements.

Speaking during an interview on the "El món a RAC1" radio show on Monday morning, Laporta clarified that Flick prefers short-term contracts.
"Hansi is a coach who likes to move year by year, with the possibility of extending for another year. We completely understand and respect his approach," he explained.

Laporta confirmed that Flick’s current deal with Barcelona runs until 2026. He added that the club’s sports committee is closely monitoring his situation, considering both technical performance and financial factors.
"While the decision about sporting continuity lies with the technical committee, financial matters are handled by the board of directors and the president," Laporta noted.

Reflecting on Flick’s appointment, Laporta revealed that sporting director Deco had strongly recommended him.
"From the beginning, I admired Flick. Although there were other options, Deco and Bojan carefully assessed his character and abilities from both a human and sporting perspective," he said.

Laporta also spoke about the atmosphere surrounding the Spanish Women’s Cup final, where Barcelona’s women’s team secured a victory against Real Madrid. He shared that Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid, personally congratulated him, highlighting the respect between the two clubs despite past tensions.

Regarding the refereeing during the final, Laporta praised referee De Burgos Bengoetxea for his management of the match and his proper use of VAR technology.

He concluded by sharing a personal moment, saying:
"When Jules Koundé scored, I jumped from my seat in celebration, but I made sure to remain respectful in my reaction."
