La Liga puts Barcelona in a new financial predicament

La Liga has dealt a severe blow to Barcelona, after deciding to cancel the Financial Fair Play (FFP) deal that allowed the Catalan club to register players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor during the January transfer window. This decision places the Catalan club in a difficult financial situation, as it is no longer able to register players in accordance with the approved financial regulations. The league issued an official statement on Wednesday in response to circulating reports regarding the institutional operation related to VIP boxes at Spotify Camp Nou, which the club reported last December. La Liga confirmed its full responsibility for implementing FFP rules. The crisis arose as a result of the club's auditor's failure to include the proceeds from the sale of future VIP boxes, worth €100 million, in the current accounts. As a result, Barcelona lost its 1:1 FFP privileges, meaning it was unable to register new players.
La Liga statement details:
The league received the financial documents for the VIP box sale on January 3, 2025, and they were initially counted as revenue allowing the club to increase its spending cap.
On February 14, La Liga requested that the High Sports Council conduct a supervisory investigation into the deal due to suspicions about its validity.
The league reiterated its request on March 17 but did not receive a clear response from the relevant supervisory authorities.
The interim financial statements subsequently submitted by Barcelona showed that the revenues were not included in the profit and loss account, contradicting previous financial reports.
Based on the new data, the Catalan club lost its Financial Fair Play privileges and became ineligible to register new players.
The club was officially informed of the adjustment of its net profit following a re-evaluation of its financial accounts.
On March 27, La Liga sent the results of its investigation to the Club Control Board, confirming the irregularity of the financial transaction reported by Barcelona.
The league announced its intention to inform the Institute of Accounting and Auditing (IAC) regarding the auditor who approved the controversial transaction in the club's accounts.
