Mbappe gives up a huge sum to join Real Madrid

Press reports revealed that French star Kylian Mbappé sacrificed a large sum of money to move to Real Madrid, a sum he would have earned had he stayed with Paris Saint-Germain and renewed his contract with the French team for another season. According to French newspaper L'Equipe, Mbappé would have received €250 million from Paris Saint-Germain had he agreed to extend his contract for an additional season with the team, rather than leaving for Real Madrid last summer on a free transfer. The newspaper explained that Mbappé waived this amount after failing to activate the unilateral renewal clause in his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, which was due to run until 2025. This came after he refused to continue with the French team for an additional season, choosing instead to move to Real Madrid. The newspaper added that Mbappé would have earned €70 million this season had he renewed his contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2025, a 20% increase compared to last season, in addition to €180 million in bonuses and incentives related to image rights. Mbappé earns €32 million per year at Real Madrid, making him the highest-paid player in Europe. The Spanish club also agreed to pay €100 million as a signing-on fee for the French striker. The newspaper explained that even if the amount Mbappé would receive with Real Madrid was divided over the five years of his contract, the total would not come close to the €250 million he would have received had he remained at Paris Saint-Germain for an additional year.
