Liverpool's Goalkeeping Coach Leaves At The End Of The Season

Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg announced his departure from the club at the end of the current season. John Achterberg will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after 15 years of service. Achterberg's contract expires this summer and he intends to embark on a new challenge following the end of the Jurgen Klopp era, meaning the goalkeeping coach will not be part of the behind-the-scenes staff under new coach Arne Slott. He initially joined the club's academy staff in 2009 before being promoted to first-team goalkeeping coach by Kenny Dalglish in 2011. Brendan Rodgers and Klopp have retained the services of the 52-year-old Dutchman. The coach is a popular figure and highly respected by both players and staff, and Klopp described Achterberg as a "goalkeeping freak", praising his encyclopedic knowledge of goalkeepers around the world. It was Achterberg who identified Alisson as the ideal role model when Liverpool were in the player market for a new No.1 in 2018. The Brazilian has proven to be a huge success at Anfield since completing a £65m transfer from Roma, and Achterberg has been credited with playing A crucial role in its development. Alisson said: “John has proven that he is not just a great goalkeeper coach, but that he is a great man. We learn from each other’s work. He is loved by everyone here.”
