Benzema's Role In Dismissing Santo From Al-Ittihad Training

Saudi press reports revealed the role of French star Karim Benzema, striker of the Saudi Jeddah Union, in dismissing Portuguese coach Nuno Santo from his position, after the recent defeat by the Iraqi Air Force, in the AFC Champions League. Al-Riyadiya newspaper reported that a strong argument occurred between Benzema and Santo in the locker room after the end of the Air Force match, which contributed significantly to the decision to dismiss Santo from coaching the team. The newspaper said that Santo criticized Benzema, saying: “You are a great player, but you seem to be lazy in putting pressure on the opponent.” For his part, Benzema got emotional and responded, saying: “Don’t just talk to me, talk to the whole group,” which angered the Portuguese coach, who said: “You are a role model for all the players and the team leader, and you must be an example for them.” Benzema had informed the administration two weeks ago of the necessity of dismissing Nuno Santo, as he confirmed that he was not the right man for this stage.
