Ten Hag: Fighting spirit is the secret of victory over Copenhagen

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised the fighting spirit his side showed to secure a nervous, but important 1-0 win against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday night. While it was another largely unimpressive performance from United, they showed enough character in the second half to secure their first points in this season’s competition to keep alive their chances of reaching the knock-out stages. “There is a very good spirit in the dressing room, they are together, they fight together, they celebrate together and if we have setbacks they support each other,” Ten Hag said after the game. “I think that spirit is always needed to be a successful team. The win was justified but it was a narrow escape.” “We worked very hard to get that win. It was a poor first half but then, to come into the game, score that goal, and then concede a soft penalty. So it was important as we needed a win today. I think we created some chances but we didn't take them.” “It is good that a defender is coming forward and scoring a brilliant goal, with a great assist from Christian Eriksen. I think we should have scored more but also we could have conceded more goals. So 1-0 and I'm happy with it, a clean sheet and we scored." "I know how good he is and the skills he has. At United, you have to show it every game, having the right focus and mindset. If he has that, he will perform. I think it's very important for him. Of course, he had some criticism but now he saves the points for the lads, it was a brilliant save just after half-time also. You can see this team is growing, we have a lot of setbacks as a team but, in the dressing room, we deal with it and, slowly, we are coming forward."
