Sociedad had gone 46 league matches without defeat since they last lost after leading at the break, but once Federico Valverde had leveled with a powerful shot from the edge of the area a minute after the resumption, it was always likely to be an uphill battle to preserve that record. Real Madrid regained the top spot in La Liga with their fifth consecutive win to lead the Spanish League standings with 15 points, two points behind runner-up Barcelona.
