Ex-Real legend Marcelo in tears after snapping opponent's leg in worst injury
Brazilian star and Real Madrid legend Marcelo left the field in tears on Tuesday evening, when he accidentally broke the leg of an opponent in the Copa Libertadores to Argentinos Juniors player Luciano Sanchez, during the match that brought them together in the Copa Libertadores championship. Sanchez's leg was visibly broken instantly, and a distressed Marcelo left the game in tears. During the second half of the match, Marcelo tried to dribble Sanchez, but he unintentionally ran over his knee, causing a very difficult injury to the latter, which caused him a red card and sent-off from the pitch. Marcelo was keen to go to Sanchez in order to check on him, and he entered into a crying fit because of this injury that he caused. After the game, the Brazilian said on social media: "Today, I had to experience a very difficult moment on the pitch. I have inadvertently injured a colleague. I want to wish you the best possible recovery, Luciano Sanchez. I send you all the strength in the world!" Football fans were also quick to react to the incident, with one fan even tweeting: "That’s the worst injury I’ve ever seen! OMG!" Gabriel Avalos opened the scoring with a volley for the hosts in the 14th minute of the first leg of the round-of-16 match. Argentinos later saw its goalkeeper Alexis Martin Arias sent off in the 76th minute, and be replaced by substitute midfielder Luciano Heredia until the end of the match. Fluminense took advantage of the opportunity and equalized with Samuel Xavier in the 87th minute from long range. The teams will play again next Tuesday at the Maracana Stadium for a place in the quarterfinals.
