Deschamps selects Mbappe as the new France captain - Reports
The French newspaper "L'Equipe" affirmed Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has accepted the proposal to become the new captain of the French national football team after discussions with coach Didier Deschamps. This comes after Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris retired from international football in January. According to reports from L’Equipe, Deschamps has chosen Mbappe, over veteran Griezmann, as part of a new era in French football. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann has also been named vice-captain following the retirement of Manchester United center-back Raphael Varane. Les Bleus kick off their Euro 2024 qualification campaign this month after losing out to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final. Didier Deschamps’ side takes on the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland, in the coming days, as they look to plot a path to the tournament in Germany in 18 months' time. Hugo Lloris’ decision to retire from international football opened up a vacancy to captain France with Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann the main candidates. The newspaper added that the 24-year-old star of the Parisian club will be the captain of the French national team, starting from the forthcoming game against the Netherlands at the start of the European Nations 2024 qualifiers. Kylian Mbappe has scored 12 goals in the FIFA World Cup for France, and contributed to 59 goals with the French national team, during 66 matches, as he scored 36 goals and provided 23 assists.
