A state of dissatisfaction prevailed among Manchester United fans and the old stars, with the status of Portuguese star Bruno Fernandez captain of the team during the catastrophic loss by Liverpool.
Former Chelsea star, Chris Sutton has told Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag to strip Bruno Fernandes of the captain’s armband following their 7-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
Fernandes has come under criticism for his behavior during the game at Anfield. This includes him asking Ten Hag to take him off as the game ran away from United.
“Whatever you think of Harry Maguire, the club captain, you would not catch him behaving like this on the pitch. Ten Hag dealt with the Cristiano Ronaldo problem.
“Now he needs to deal with Fernandes, starting with deciding whether he deserves to wear the armband in Thursday’s Europa League clash with Real Betis,” Sutton wrote in his Daily Mail column.
Amid the club's worst-ever result in the Premier League and joint-worst defeat in its history, Fernandes was moaning at everyone, resentful and passing his negative feelings on to his team mates, constantly waving his arms.
Two former United captains, Gary Neville, and Roy Keane could not remain silent while covering the match in the Sky Sports studio.
"Fernandez's body language today was disgraceful, really talented boy, he's your captain, but his body language, he's waving his arms, he's not running backward, you wouldn't be happy with him in your dressing room," Kane said.
Neville went further: "Bruno Fernandes is standing in the center circle with his arms raised asking: 'Why don't I go out?' Honestly, I have to say some of his behavior in the second half was a disgrace."
He continued: “The second half was a disgrace, a mess, embodied only by captain Bruno Fernandez, who I think was embarrassing at times in this match.”
