Real Madrid legend ‘The Magician’, Amancio Amaro dies
Former Real Madrid player Amancio Amaro, one of the legends of Real Madrid in the sixties and seventies of the last century, and current honorary president Amancio Amaro passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83. Real Madrid confirmed his death in a statement on their website, which read: “Amancio Amaro has passed away at the age of 83. He will be remembered by all Madridistas and by all football fans as one of the great legends of this sport. Real Madrid extends its condolences to all Real Madrid fans.” Amaro is adored by fans of the Spanish side having played 471 games, scored 155 goals, and helped them to nine league titles after joining from Deportivo La Coruna back in 1962. 'He has always been an example for Real Madrid fans and for the entire world of sport.'In 1966 he won the sixth European Cup for Real Madrid at the Heysel stadium in Brussels, in a historic final in which he scored our team's first goal to beat Partizan Belgrade. Amancio Amaro spent 14 years in the ranks of the Royal Club, winning the Spanish Championship nine times, the Cup 3 times and the European Champions League once in 1966, and he was crowned top scorer in the Spanish League twice. Amaro, who was called "The Magician" (El Brujo), defended the colors of the Spanish national team in 42 matches and was crowned with La Roja in the European Cup in 1964.
