France suffered a blow on the eve of the World Cup with starlet Christopher Nkunku suffering a tournament-ending injury in training. The RB Leipzig forward was left in a heap on the ground after a challenge from Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga at the French National Football Centre in Clairefontaine on Tuesday.
The French Football Federation confirmed soon after that the 25-year-old had suffered a left knee injury and would not be able to play in Qatar. A statement from the French national team read: “Injured in training, Christopher Nkunku must give up participating in the World Cup.
“The whole group shares Christopher’s sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery.” Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani, 23, has been called up as Nkunku’s replacement.
Muani has scored eight goals in 23 appearances for Frankfurt this season. The replacement for Christopher Nkunku will be announced once the medical file is validated by FIFA.
