Inaki Williams opts to represent Ghana at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar
Athletic Club's Inaki Williams announced he will opt to represent Ghana at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, having previously played for Spain. In an ironic video, Athletic Bilbao's Inaki Williams eloquently uses the Spanish language to describe his decision to represent Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
"My parents have raised me with values based on humility, respect, and love. They have taught me to embrace life. In that constant quest to continue growing and working upon the pursuit of evolving personally and professionally as an individual,” Inaki Williams said.
Some key excerpts of Inaki's announcement read "I want to return a small part of everything it has given to us because Ghana has played a significant part in becoming who I am as a person, as a son and as a brother."
Regardless of all that, he is still a quality player and Ghana will be better for having him especially if he meant this part of his speech, “Today a new challenge begins. From now on, I will defend Ghana’s t-shirt with all my will whilst I give my best. I’m one of the Black Stars.”
The 28-year-old striker believes it is an opportunity to cultivate a deeper connection to his origins. Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, Williams has made one appearance for La Roja at the senior international level but in a friendly, coming on as a substitute against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016. Also, as part of Spain's run to the Under-21 Euro 2017 final, Williams' ability to switch allegiance falls under FIFA's eligibility rules change of 2003, when Tim Cahill opted to play for Australia after representing Western Samoa at the junior level
