Saint-Etienne relegated from Ligue 1 after losing a play-off against Auxerre

Saint-Etienne, who owns a record-tying 10 league titles,  were relegated from the Ligue 1 on Sunday after losing 5-4 on penalty kicks to AJ Auxerre in their promotion-relegation playoff, 5-4, after a 2-2 draw in the two legs of the supplement. The first leg ended 1-1, before they tied with the same result in the second leg Sunday, so the two teams resorted to penalty kicks, which Auxerre wins 5-4, and Etienne returned to the French League after an absence of 10 years.
The defeat sparked a pitch invasion by angry Etienne fans, with many hurling flares at the main stand and towards the players' tunnel. Saint-Etienne finished the current season of the French League in 18th place, playing the two playoff matches against the third-placed Auxerre team in the French second division.
Toulouse locked up the title this season as they finished ahead of Ajaccio by four points. Both teams will be heading to Ligue 1 next season
