3 candidates to take over as Man United captain next season including Ronaldo

UK press reports have revealed that a new Manchester United captain will be considered if Harry Maguire's role as captain of the club could be taken over from the England defender to install a new skipper next season. Maguire was made skipper at Old Trafford by Ole Gunnar Solskajer just five months after joining the club despite his struggles. Incoming gaffer Erik Ten Hag will have a decision to make a new change when he arrives in the summer after Maguire has been subjected to stick for his performances this campaign.According to ESPN, Maguire is not even sure of his key role at Manchester United next season, with Ten Hag wanting to play a high defensive line against the former Sheffield United youngster. However, the new manager said earlier this week that he is looking forward to working with the 29-year-old, calling him a "great player".Erik Ten Hag named Maguire in a recent interview, he said: "I have to repeat that next season is a different season but I think he did a great job. He's a great player; he's achieved already a lot really also with his contribution to Manchester United. So I'm looking forward to working with him."Maguire finished his current season with two goals in 37 games but started only one of his team's last five Premier League games this season, a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Red Devils are expected to sign at least one new center-back this summer, with Villarreal's Pau Torres and Ajax's Joren Timber believed to be the club's main targets. ESPN reports that Maguire could lose the captain's armband for next season, with De Gea, Fernandes, and Ronaldo in the race if a change is made, and the three are: Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, and Spain goalkeeper David de Gea. Ronaldo is also set to remain at Old Trafford this summer despite speculation surrounding his future. The 37-year-old has also enjoyed a solid season on a personal level, scoring 24 goals in 38 appearances.
