Villarreal stuns European winners Bayern Munich in a frantic Champions League quarter-final

Bayern München fell to a disappointing 1-0 away defeat at the hands of Villarreal in the first Champions League quarterfinal clash on Wednesday. The defeat ended Bayern's record run of 22 matches unbeaten away from home in the Champions League. Arnaut Danjuma opened the scoring in the eighth minute by redirecting a close-range shot by Dani Parejo as the Bayern defense was caught off guard.
Villarreal pulled off another surprising Champions League result with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The "Opta" network, which specializes in monitoring statistics, stated that Villarreal ended the Bavarian record run of 22 matches unbeaten away from home in the Champions League, since losing to Paris Saint-Germain by 3-0 in September 2017.
Opta added that coach Unai Emery is the common factor in Bayern Munich's last two defeats outside its home stadium in the Champions League, because he was leading PSG in 2017, when he defeated the Bavarian team by three goals.
FCB Julian Nagelsmann's men now have a deficit to overturn in next week's second leg when they will encounter again next Tuesday at the Alianz Arena, the stronghold of Bayern Munich.
